Renato Abbate (renatoabbate76@gmail.com) was born in Italy and transplanted yearly till 1999. He currently lives in Wilmington and loves the port city. He is always looking for ways to push his work further using mixed media and clay. Innovation is his inspiration.

Creating Stained Glass Art

Instructor: Jane Del Rosso Freach

Immerse yourself in learning the ageless art of producing your very own stained glass art piece, be it a window, a door corner, a box, or a sun catcher. During this class as a beginning student, you'll be given instruction on how to make two-dimensional and/or three-dimensional stained glass art pieces. You will receive a list of the essential pre-purchased tools and materials needed to complete your stained glass project as well as the "how to" for setting up your own workshop space at home. During the course you'll be given guidance in safety methods for cutting, grinding, foiling, and soldering your glass piece. And in the end, you'll be putting each individual piece together to complete your chosen design. Skills to be developed include pattern selection, color and type of glass selection, paper pattern cutting, pattern transference onto the glass, glass cutting, copper foiling, soldering, glass cleaning, applying patina and wax if desired to your piece, and display of your finished stained glass art.

Printmaking Studies: Intro to Drypoint

Learn the intaglio printmaking process of drypoint in this three day workshop. Developed in the late 15th century, drypoint is a technique in which drawing is scratched directly into a printing plate by using a pointed tool. Rembrandt used this method to relay his spontaneous, expressive drawing style, creating rich blacks as well as subtle shades of gray. Students will learn the basics of plate making, inking and printing using an etching press. Students are asked to come to first class with an image or drawing they wish to use for their plate.

Printmaking Studies: Incorporating Color with Drypoint

Instructor: Antoinette Vogt

Drypoint is an intaglio printmaking technique in which a sharp tool is used to scratch the drawing or design into the plate. In this class students will learn techniques to add color to their prints. Both hand coloring techniques and color printing "a la poupee" will be explored. Printing "a la Poupee" refers to adding colors onto the plate all at once and then running it through the press to create a multi-colored print. From start to finish, students will learn the basics of plate making, inking, and printing using an etching press. Students are asked to come to first class with an image or drawing they wish to use for their plates. No previous experience required. (Acrylic plates and printing paper will be provided. See supply list for remaining supplies.)

3D Sculpture Studio

Learn how to sculpt using wire, wine corks, epoxy clay, and acrylic paint in this six-day workshop. Bring your inspiration or get ideas using our examples. This workshop is designed to introduce you to creating a 3D sculpture using epoxy clay. In this workshop, students will learn the basics: Materials needed to begin working on epoxy sculptures. What type of supports to use and how to prepare them? Working wire to make the substructure of the sculpture. Using repurposed material in the creation of the sculpture.
