Exploring Drypoint Printmaking

Instructor: Antoinette Vogt

Learn the ins and outs of the intaglio printmaking process of drypoint. Developed in the late 15th century, drypoint is a technique in which a drawing is scratched directly into a printing plate by using a pointed tool. Rembrandt used this method to relay his spontaneous, expressive drawing style, creating rich blacks as well as subtle shades of gray. From start to finish, students will learn the basics of plate making, inking and printing using an etching press. Different techniques will be demonstrated to add texture to the plate. Begin by printing in black ink and then explore ways to add color. Hand coloring and color printing a-la-poupee will be covered. Students are asked to come to first class with an image, photo or drawing they wish to use for their plate. Supply fee includes two acrylic plates so students can experiment and explore different techniques.
